Protocol for treatment/prevention
of constipation in CATs
The most important factor is increased
fluid intake....And approximately 1/3 cup of water to 1 can of wet food.
The water you add to the food should be flax water; this is made by
boiling 1 tablespoon of whole flaxseeds in 1 quart of water for about 30 minutes. Allow to cool
and strain into smaller containers for future use. (Do not feed the whole
seeds.) This mixture should be kept in the refrigerator and can be stored
for 2 weeks. Your kitty will probably prefer this mixture be warmed to
about room temperature before adding to his or her food.
This flax water will help soften the
stools and encourage motility. It is also important to set a regular
feeding schedule. Make sure to feed your kitty at the same time each day
as this will encourage regularity. If your kitty does not eat all of his
or her food at each set meal time, pick up the bowls and wait until the next
scheduled feeding time.
